The gas sniffing spacecraft ExoMars reached Mars

The gas sniffing spacecraft the ExoMars reached the planned orbit around Mars at last after one year of delaying. The ExoMars is launched in search of trace gases in the Mar’s atmosphere, which is likely related to life. After two weeks, it will start working with the European Space Agency and the orbiter of Roscosmos.

The ExoMars is situated in the orbiter 250 miles i.e. 400 km away from Mars surface and it revolves Mars once in two hours.

The Mars atmosphere is very thin, which is 100 times thinner than the atmosphere of the Earth. In the Mar’s environment, where the carbon dioxide level is about 95 percent, the nitrogen level is about 2.7 percent and the oxygen level is about 1.6 percent. There are trace gases which are less than one percent of total volume, which contains carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, neon, water etc. But mainly the searching for the gas in the Martian atmosphere is Methane as it can be a proof of living organ in Mars as on earth; as methane is emitted by human activities.

Some scientists think that there was methane in the Martian atmosphere but that was for only 400 years, then the methane mixed with the other chemicals of Mar’s environment due to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight and spread out in the environment due to the wind. So if The ExoMars can find out some methane in Mar’s atmosphere, it means that the Mars is still geologically active and some microbial organism can exist there.
Before the ExoMars mission, the Mars Express of ESA and the Curiosity rover of NASA gave the clue of the presence of methane on Mars but the reports were not convincing at all.

The ExoMars is the strongest one to search methane on the Mars than the other missions, and it has three times powerful sensor than the previous machines which can detect an even very small source of methane.

Many sensors and high-resolution cameras will have a peer look, the surface of Mars will be scanned and search even the bottom area of the surface if there is any leaked source of gas or water ice which is covered under the surface.

In 2016, The ExoMars was attempted to launch along with the Schiaparelli EDM lander but unfortunately crashed. The lander the ExoMars 2020 made by Roscosmos will be placed in 2021 and NASA’s InSight Lander will also reach in 2021. Then The ExoMars will do dual work as a communicating station.
